VPA members will judge the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest in mid-November. If you’re interested in judging, email janetm@vpa.net today.

It’s that time of year when the Virginia Press Association calls upon its esteemed membership to help judge a newspaper contest. This year, we will trade judging responsibilities with the Iowa Newspaper Association.

We need judges (and lots of them) for both the editorial and advertising contests.
And since Iowa uses an online system — Better Newspapers Contest — you can judge the work of other journalists, photographers and graphic designers easily from your desk at work, your recliner at home or even in the car at your kid’s sports practice.
Our volunteer judges have commented over the years that participating is rewarding in many ways as judging offers fresh story ideas, highlights different writing styles, and serves as inspiration for ad design, special sections and page design.
We need to furnish the names of our volunteers to the Iowa Newspaper Association by mid-October so that assignments can be made and judging can begin in November.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email Janet Madison, VPA’s director of member services,to janetm@vpa.net. Include your name, phone number, name of the newspaper you are affiliated with and whether it’s a weekly or daily, your position, your mailing address, your preferred category and any other additional information you think would be helpful so that we can match you appropriately to a judging category.
