It’s that time of year when the Virginia Press Association calls upon its membership to help judge another press association’s news and advertising contest.

This year, we will be judging entries for the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association, which recognizes excellence in categories that focus on editorial, design and revenue, plus special awards for standout personnel, Freedom of Information coverage, Courage in Journalism, Best Moves, and News Organization of the Year.

Our volunteer judges have commented over the years that judging other contests is rewarding in many ways. Evaluating other people’s work can provide inspiration for ad design, news articles, special sections and page design.

We need to provide the MDDC Press Association with the names of 50 judges by Feb. 1. If you are interested in volunteering, please email VPA Member Services Director Janet Madison at as soon as possible.

Please Include your name, phone number, name of the newspaper you are affiliated with and whether it’s a weekly or daily, your position, your mailing address, your preferred category and any other additional information you think would be helpful so that we can match you appropriately to a judging category.
