Join the VPA

Please download the appropriate membership application and mail the completed form, along with payment and supporting documents, to Virginia Press Association, 4860 Cox Rd., Suite 150, Glen Allen, VA 23060. You may also email your completed application to Janet Madison, membership manager, at janetm@vpa.net

Active Membership

 

Active (or Regular) Membership in the VPA is open to any bona fide daily or weekly newspaper of general circulation published in Virginia and holding a U.S. Postal Service publications class mailing permit. Border state newspapers (those actively seeking and servicing subscribers in Virginia, providing regular staff coverage of Virginia affairs and including Virginia as part of their market) are also eligible for active membership. Active Membership is the only membership category entitled to vote and to hold office in the association. Free distribution newspapers may be eligible for active membership if they meet the criteria set forth in the VPA’s bylaws.

Online Membership

 

Online Membership is open to online publications that have been:

  • Published for at least 12 months, prior to application;
  • Use recognized standards of professional journalism;

Principally devoted to the dissemination of local or general news with at least 50 percent of all editorial (non-ad) content reported and original.Refer to VPA bylaws for details.

Affiliate Membership

 

Affiliate Memberships are open to businesses or associations that sell newspaper supplies, equipment or services. Refer to VPA bylaws for details.

Associate Membership

 

Associate Membership in the VPA is open to free distribution newspapers and college/university newspapers as set forth in VPA’s bylaws. Associate members can participate in VPA contests and enjoy all member services. Free distribution newspapers who have chosen to qualify as papers of record for purposes of carrying legal notice advertising must apply for active membership.

Freelance/Individual Membership

 

Individuals formerly affiliated with an active member newspaper, or with an associate member publication, or with an affiliate member who desire to contribute to the welfare of the association and to attend its meetings may apply for an individual membership. This includes freelance professionals who have had at least one piece of work published by an active VPA member. Students enrolled in colleges and universities and public or private secondary schools, or instructors of journalism or mass communication in public or private secondary schools or institutions of higher education, may apply for an individual membership.

Educational Institution Membership

 

Educational Institution Memberships are open to all Virginia college, university, and public or private secondary school mass communications departments and/or media relations offices interested in fostering their relationships with the press.

Student Membership

 

Student Memberships are open to all Virginia college, university, and public or private secondary school students interested in fostering their relationships with the press.
