News Leader president, publisher leaving

Roger Watson, publisher and president of the News Leader in Staunton, is leaving the newspaper and his position will not be filled.

“It has been a great privilege to be able to lead The News Leader these past 12 years,” Watson told the News Leader.“The Opies left a tremendous legacy of community journalism in Staunton, and I have been honored to be a caretaker of that heritage.”

Watson has been publisher and president of the daily paper since 2005.

“For the first time since joining Gannett in 1996, I am a free agent. It’s admittedly a bit scary, but also exciting to have this chance to reflect and determine what I really want to do.”
