Winchester Star names new managing editor, begins publishing new magazine

The Winchester Star has named a new managing editor and has begun publishing a new quarterly magazine.

Cynthia Cather Burton will serve as the Star’s new managing editor. She follows Maria Montgomery, who served in the position since 2008.

Burton has worked at the Star since 1994. Prior to accepting the managing editor position, she served as the paper’s city editor.

The Star’s new magazine, Access, was published for the first time last week. The free publication is full-color and glossy and will be produced and published by the Star each quarter. It will focus on “lifestyle news–arts, entertainment, events, dining, people, wine and beer,” according to the paper.

The Star, which was owned by the Byrd family for more than 120 years, was recently sold to Ogden Newspapers.

Roanoke Times reporter wins national award for ‘end-of-life’ series

Luanne Rife, a healthcare reporter for the Roanoke Times, has won a first-place award from the Association of Health Care Journalists for a series of stories that examined people at the end of their lives.

Rife’s series, “Final Wishes,” was called a “a journalistic tour de force” by the judges.

Fauquier Times, Prince William/Gainesville Times hires new leadership, relocates office

Piedmont Media LLC, who publishes the Fauquier Times and Prince William/Gainesville Times, has hired a new publisher for the two newspapers, and moved their office building to a new location in Old Town Warrenton.

Catherine Nelson, who was previously worked as publisher of Vermont Community Media, will take over as publisher of the Times papers.

In addition to a new publisher and a new office, the Timespapers have also named a new editor-in-chief, a new production manager and a new managing editor.

Christopher Six will serve as editor-in-chief at the papers. Cindy Goff will serve as the new production manager. and Jill Palermo will now be the managing editor at the three papers. All three have worked for Piedmont since 2016.

Piedmont Media also publishes, and three quarterly magazines.
