Longtime RTD employee retires 

Claudia Cronin-Andrews, a 45-year employee of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, retired from the newspaper last week.

Since 2005, Cronin-Andrews served as publisher Tom Silvestri’s administrative assistant. Previously, she worked in “circulation, the Richmond News Leader newsroom, the merged Richmond Times-Dispatch in 1992, the Publishing Division of Media General Inc. and the administration of the RTD,” according to an article written by Silvestri.

Former Roanoke Times columnist dies

Ben Beagle, a former columnist for the Roanoke Times who entertained readers with “slice-of life” columns and humor for more than 50 years, passed away last Saturday. He was 90.

“He had a knack for reporting everyday events and the humanity of it all,” said George Kegley, a retired reporter and editor who worked alongside Beagle for nearly 40 years. “He blazed the trail for column writing.”

Va. News Photographers Association names 2017 award winners 

The Virginia News Photographer’s Association held their annual awards last week where several VPA members were given top honors.

The Photographer of the Year Award was given to Matt McClain from the Washington Post. Best in Show went to Ryan Kelly, formerly of the Daily Progress.

Daily Progress names new art director

The Daily Progress has named a new art director.

Chris Conklin was named the Progress’ new art director last week. He previously worked at C-ville Weekly and at The Hookas an art director.

Conklin’s role at the paper will “include design and innovation in numerous print and digital channels. In collaboration with the newsroom’s visual editor, he will have responsibility for overall content presentation.”
