Opportunity Description

Hampton Roads ain’t Hollywood, but it’ll be your job to make sure our entertainment products reflect that this area isn’t far off. Some of the biggest names in pop culture — past and present, behind-the-scenes and in the forefront — originated here. Plus, we are a major arts circuit that draws the hottest productions in the country, from concert tours to theatrical runs. We attract our share of paparazzi magnets, too: Kanye and KimK very well may be seen enjoying our Atlantic shoreline.

But our primary mission at The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press is local discovery. This is a job for the intrepid cultural observer who not only is in tune with the spotlight, but also has a pulse on the underground and can introduce our audiences to worthy indie performers.

The right candidate will cover the arts and entertainment scene in a way that combines fun and a sense of adventure with carpet-bombing thoroughness, writing prowess and productivity. You should thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, and be able to meet daily deadlines while juggling multiple assignments.

You should be a self-starter with a keen awareness of current events and emerging cultural developments to provide authoritative context, analyses and informed reviews. Consumer-centric is key: You would be the filter through which readers decide how to best spend their time.

These stories must be delivered in a clear, energetic manner that is engaging and meaningful to readers. That means taking cues from our digital analytics and our readers to identify story topics, themes and formats.

So if you think you can crack into the circles of the likes of Timbaland and Pharrell, plus develop connections to own the local entertainment beat, you should submit a résumé, cover letter and three to five clips to Jamesetta Walker ( and Erica Smith (
