A group of community newspapers in Southeastern Virginia is seeking one to two highly driven, self-motivating interns for this summer.
Interns will work for the Suffolk News-Herald, The Smithfield Times, The Tidewater News and the Windsor Weekly. You will get the full range of experiences needed in today’s newsroom as you assist this small staff with putting out five papers weekly across a coverage area that spans two cities and three counties.
Duties will include pitching, reporting and writing stories; taking photos and videos to accompany those stories as well as those that can stand alone as a human interest piece; assisting with website and social media updates; editing the work of other reporters and proofing pages; and performing other duties as needed. You may get the chance to cover breaking news, local government, education, courts, features, in-depth reporting and more. Event coverage on some nights and Saturdays may be asked of you. Opportunities to write long-form features for lifestyle magazines may be available. The opportunity to shadow the page designer for a day and learn Adobe programs including InDesign is available if interested.
Interns must have a driver’s license and reliable transportation. Any other previous experience in journalism or coursework related to journalism will be a plus.
College students and recent college graduates are encouraged to apply. These will be unpaid internships, but the experience will be unparalleled, and we are happy to fill out any paperwork needed for college credit, if offered by your school.
Send a letter of interest, resume and any clips to email@example.com.
