The Richmond Times-Dispatch is looking for a copy editor who is equally comfortable working in the print and online realms, and who can help lead the way toward making our editing team a truly digital-first operation. Our ideal candidate has the skills of a traditional copy editor — a critical mind, strong command of AP style and top-notch headline-writing abilities — plus social media proficiency, SEO knowledge and familiarity with website management. She or he also is a news and culture junkie who can discuss foreign relations news as well as what to watch on Netflix.

• Edit news, business and features stories
• Write engaging, keyword-filled headlines, as well as cutlines that complement stories
• Do quick but careful initial reads of stories for
• Post stories to social media and send breaking news alerts across platforms
• Help keep up to date through our content management system
• Assist with the preparation and editing of email newsletters
• Pull wire stories and prepare them for publication
• Uphold standards in a fast-paced environment
• Balance multiple assignments and priorities on deadline


• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or related discipline
• Two years of experience at a daily newspaper
• Expertise in social media platforms
• Familiarity with website analytics tools
• Be a strong communicator, with excellent interpersonal skills, who works with desk colleagues and newsroom departments in a professional manner
• Able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
