Opportunity Description

Seeking: a local government reporter who will hold elected officials accountable and write with empathy about the people living in their coverage area. This is a position for someone dedicated to finding the most complete version of the truth; someone who will strive to use a geographic beat as a launching pad for issues stories with statewide impact. Show us clips that make use of data and FOIA. Demonstrate a track record of producing compelling, timely and well-sourced stories.

You will be expected to produce a mix of daily and enterprise stories and contribute to projects. Local government reporters must think visually, and collaborate with photographers on elements that expand the story, not just validate it.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Submits clear, crisp copy that is free of errors. Meets deadlines. Learns from mistakes.

Breaks news and digs deeper for enterprise stories competitors overlook.

Minds beat from the bottom up. Connects with communities and writes about the lived experiences of people in the coverage area. Produces timely stories and covers meetings and other events pertinent to beat.

Accepts story assignments, generates better ones and completes them as quickly as possible.

Keeps editors informed of stories underway, with length and deadline estimates.

When asked, takes clear photographs, with good composition, and gets information and names for cutlines.

Produces enough stories, of high quality, and style in accordance with company standards.

Other projects and duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree and Spanish language skills preferred.
