Director of Student Media
Student Media is dedicated to the support and encouragement of responsible, independent student media to connect, explore and enrich the lives of the university’s many constituencies. It operates on a model of individual responsibility and professional standards and encourages the values of integrity, tenacity, creativity and honesty in the pursuit of excellence. The Director will provide support, guidance and consultation to student media organizations to assist the Student Media Center in fulfilling their mission.

Preferred Hiring Standards:
-Master’s degree preferred in communication, English, Higher Education/Student Personnel, or a related field.
-Ability to serve as the principal spokesperson for the Student Media Center.
-Experience with advising students in the following areas: business and finance, project management, media ethics and leadership development.
-Familiar with assistive technology best practices.
-Ability to use social media to advise students on best practices for sharing content and audience engagement.
-Demonstrates basic understanding and ability to work with multiple content management systems.
-Experience selling advertisements and other revenue generating duties as needed.
-Knowledge of emerging legal issues and trends, particularly in college media.
-General knowledge of CAS standards for college/student media
-Experience with (or ability to) conducting strategic planning and implementing unit or program-level assessment on operation effectiveness and impact on student learning and development
Minimum Hiring Standards:
-Bachelor’s degree with significant professional journalism experience.
-Demonstrated experience in student media, including but not limited to print, radio, and TV and/or a background in multiple aspects of media like print media, radio, web, television and digital media.
-Strong editorial background and extensive familiarity with the field of journalism.
-Supervisory experience with professional and student staff.
-Familiarity with budget management.
-Strong oral and written communication skills.
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
-Ability to work effectively with internal and external constituent groups.
-Working and hands-on knowledge of production equipment used for media.
-Strong, personal and professional integrity, with adherence to ethical standards in the student media profession.
-Understands Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
