Mike Reilley
Mike has been an SPJ/Google News Initiative digital trainer who has taught Google News Initiative tools to more than 9,900 journalists and educators in 290 trainings in 40 states over the past six years. He also is co-founder of and trainer with Penny Press Digital LLC, a consulting and training company. When he’s not doing trainings, he teaches data and digital journalism at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he is a full-time faculty member.
A former reporter at the LA Times and web editor at the Chicago Tribune, Mike served for 13 years as a faculty member at Northwestern, Arizona State University and DePaul University, teaching digital journalism to hundreds of students and professional journalists. He holds journalism degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (undergrad) and Northwestern University (masters). Mike founded and updates the research site The Journalist’s Toolbox (journaliststoolbox.org) for SPJ and runs the Chicago website, The Red Line Project (redlineproject.org) with his students. Beth Potter is the United States manager for the Journalism Trust Initiative, an international nonprofit group affiliated with Reporters Without Borders in France. She has a doctorate in media research and practice from the University of Colorado Boulder and worked for close to 30 years as a reporter, editor and publisher, both domestically and overseas.

Christopher Tyree, co-founder & senior director
For more than 30 years, the Virginia native has carried his cameras and pens to report on stories from around the commonwealth and nearly every continent. His projects have been published in hundreds of the world's leading periodicals and broadcast networks including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, CNN, National Geographic TV, BBC, The Guardian and Mother Jones. He spent almost a decade as a multimedia journalist at The Virginian-Pilot.
Tyree's photography, films, writing and editing have been recognized nationally and internationally, earning him numerous awards from esteemed competitions including the Association of British Science Writers, Pictures of the Year international, National Press Photographers Association, Communication Arts, Society for Environmental Journalists, and The Associated Press.
His ground breaking reporting on micro plastic contamination of global drinking water in 2017-2018 led the World Health Organization to investigate the human health implications and has led to millions of dollars being devoted to research on the topic.

Studio in Your Pocket – Robert Griffith, Award-Winning Documentary Filmmaker, Griffith Films LLC
Robert Griffith, owner of Griffith Films LLC, is an international award-winning filmmaker who has been telling stories on film and video for more than thirty-five years. His early training and experience as a documentary and news cameraman for national networks NBC and CBS, led to his forming Griffith Films as an independent filmmaker, creating films and television commercials for regional and national clients.
For the last decade, Griffith has concentrated on producing long-format documentaries focusing on a variety of compelling social issues. His latest recognition was being awarded the Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts, in the category of Film. Recent documentaries include Seasons With Brian and Julia, which has been screened coast to coast, and Voices of Hope and Recovery, currently being viewed nationwide.
Griffith has won multiple awards, including First Place in the Association of Film Commissioners International Competition in 2006, for Moviemaking in Virginia: Part 2. Griffith served as Director of Photography for the feature length film Lillian, which won a Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Award.

Above the Scroll: Acquiring Tomorrow’s Readers Today – Ellen Moseley, Chris West and Stefan Babich, Foxglove Marketing
Ellen Moseley is a digital marketer and recovering journalist. Her 15-year career at The Roanoke Times spanned a variety of roles, including copy editor, page designer, news editor and online editor.
She co-founded the company that would become Foxglove Marketing in 2016 with a mission to help small business owners create and build critical online marketing channels. Now, she is chiefly responsible for content planning and development, including social media, email marketing, website management and more.
Along the way, Ellen has picked up a variety of marketing skills and tools that she wishes she could go back and apply to content distribution efforts in the newsroom.
When she's not working, Ellen can be found cooking, following reggae bands, and snuggling with her miniature schnauzers.
Chris West is a digital strategist who applies traditional marketing principles to an increasingly technological age.
Chris began his journey in print media but saw the rising influence of digital over his 13-year career. He served as an account executive, retail manager, and divisional sales manager at The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer before transitioning to The Roanoke Times where he served as the digital advertising manager.
As a co-founder of Foxglove Marketing, Chris spends most of his time meeting with clients. His responsibilities include client acquisition, account management, marketing strategy, business consulting and client reporting.
Outside of work hours, Chris can be found spending time with family, attending horseback riding lessons, and cooking Sunday dinners.
Stefan Babich is a seasoned marketing professional with over 20 years of marketing experience, including 16 years in the newspaper industry, where he held various print and digital roles, including Vice President of The Roanoke Times.
As co-owner of Foxglove Marketing, Stefan is dedicated to developing and executing effective digital marketing strategies for clients, ensuring that they see meaningful and measurable results. He is particularly skilled in customer acquisition strategies and campaign performance tracking, which he uses to ensure that clients get the best possible return on their investments using the latest digital technologies and strategies.
In his spare time, Stefan likes to acquire new skills, spend time with his two German shepherds, and go skiing and snowboarding in the Rocky Mountains with his two sons, Ayden and Madden.

Drunk Drivers, Lying Politicians & Watchdogs - Martin Kaiser, managing director of the University of Maryland Capital News Service
Martin Kaiser is the first managing director of the University of Maryland Capital News Service. He coordinates efforts among CNS’ numerous bureaus and news teams and helps the news service collaborate with the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism on projects of national importance.
Kaiser, who led the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to three Pulitzer Prizes while editor there from 1997 to 2015, came to Merrill College as the first Howard Distinguished Visiting Fellow. In that role, he helped launch the Howard Center and worked with CNS. In 2009, Editor & Publisher magazine named Kaiser Editor of the Year for his work in Milwaukee, where he increased investigative and enterprise reporting while developing one of the most respected newsroom cultures in the nation.
Before arriving in Milwaukee, Kaiser was associate managing editor of The Baltimore Sun. He previously was executive sports editor of the Chicago Sun-Times and a reporter and editor at newspapers in Florida.

Kira Rider is the Art Director & Digital Media Coordinator for James River Media, which includes HOME magazine and WLNI radio. Prior to that, she was a designer for the Richmond Times-Dispatch for more than 7 years. She specialized in layout and infographics. In 2019, she received VPA’s Best in Show award for Daily Graphics, Illustration and Art.
Kira graduated from Ball State University in 2015 with a major in journalism graphics. She completed a double minor of digital publishing and graphic arts technology.
Dennis Brack is co-managing partner of Rappahannock Media, which publishes community newspapers (in Prince William, Rappahannock and Culpeper), local magazines, specialty publications and InsideNoVa.com, Northern Virginia’s largest news digital site. Brack became publisher of the Rappahannock News in 2013 after leaving The Washington Post Company, where he worked in a variety of positions in the Post’s newsroom, including leading the design and graphics teams, and at Foreign Policy magazine as its creative director.
Earlier in his career, Brack worked for Knight Ridder and helped lead newspaper redesign projects in Spain and Bolivia. His first summer internship was in Virginia at the Fauquier Times-Democrat in Warrenton, and he later interned at The Virginian-Pilot. Brack grew up in Fairfax and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Chris Coates is the executive editor of The Times-Dispatch in Richmond, Virginia. A Trenton, Michigan, native, he is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago and has been a business reporter in Los Angeles, managing editor of Illinois publications for the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis and editor of the Sioux City Journal in northwestern Iowa. He also was the investigations editor of The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware, and Central Illinois editor for Lee Enterprises.
Chris was one of Editor & Publisher’s “25 under 35” in 2013 and the Iowa State University Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication Chamberlin Fellow in 2014. In 2020, he was named Illinois Editor of the Year by the Illinois Press Association.
Chris previously was president of the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors board and currently serves on the Virginia Press Association Board of Directors.
