Optimizing an ExpressionEngine site for search engines starts with a simple set of tags on the header file and in each individual template.

Let’s say the site has just one header used by all templates. First go to a template and view the embedded header tag. Add the variable below:

Change “Title of the Page” to the actual title. Do this for every template.

Now go to the header file and add this code:

{embed:page_title}

Save that page and view the results. You should see a new title on each page.

In order to add SEO keywords to a page, use this code on each template:

{embed="site/header" page_title="Title of the Page” meta_keywords="keywords" }

Change “keywords” to the actual keywords. Go to the header file and add this code below the title code:

Save the file and view the results. Obviously, you can add both the title and the keywords to each template at the same time.

Content in EE is displayed using html tags, while the functionality is displayed using Expression Engine tags. All EE tags begin with {exp: and end with a the bracket }.

For example, this tag displays the name of the weblog created in the previous tutorial: {exp:weblog:weblog_name weblog="news"}

The first part of the tag, exp:, tells ExpressionEngine that this is a tag. The second part, weblog, is the module that the tag belongs to, in this case the Weblog module. The third part (which not every tag will have), weblog_name, is the specific function from within the module that you’re calling; in this case the function to display the “Weblog name,” which is news.

The following combination of html, CSS and EE tags displays 10 news stories in the news weblog:

1. {embed="includes/header"}

2. {embed="includes/leftnav1"}

3.

4.
News

5. {exp:weblog:entries weblog="news" limit="10"}

6.
{title}

7. {summary}

8. {/exp:weblog:entries}

9.

10. {embed="includes/footer"}

Here is an explaination of each line:

1. Displays a page header that is pulled from a template called includes

2. Displays a left nav pulled from a template called includes

3. A CSS tag

4. An HTML tag that displays the name of the section

5. An EE tag that displays 10 entries (articles) that have been published within the news weblog

6. A combination of html and EE that displays the title and a link to the full story

7. A summary of the story that is explained in our guide on how to publish a story

8. A closing EE tag that ends the display of any more stories.

9. A CSS tag that closes the first CSS tag

This guide assumes that Expression Engine has been installed on your server. The three most important concepts are templates, weblogs and tags. This guide in brief focuses on templates.

1. Log in to the console

2. Click on Templates and New Template Group

3. Fill in the name and Submit

4. Click on the new template group under Choose a Group. You will see an Index automatically created.

My First EE Site

    Hello world! This is where my entry should show up.

6. Click on Update and then View Rendered Template

Note that this creates a main site template. It is possible to create templates for individual sections, such as news, which are known in Expression Engine as weblogs.

The new VPA.net was built on a platform called Expression Engine. Information about the software can be found at ExpressionEngine.com.

EE is worth considering for weekly and small daily newspaper Web sites because of its low cost (a commercial license is $250), simple way to update content and flexible template structure. It does require a high initial effort to create the site.

Once the site is set up, reporters and editors just log into the site, go to the Publish area, click on a site section name, paste their story and save it. The software will automatically update the index page with the new story.

The platform also has limited technical support provided through moderated message boards on ExpressionEngine.com.

Media General uses EE for most of its weekly newspaper Web sites.

Modules include forums, wikis, email newsletters, commenting, membership and galleries.
