The son of Hannibal Albert and Celia Cox Compton, he was born at Compton Mountain, December 6, 1932. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Victor, Ray and Ralph Compton. He began school at the old Loggy Bottom School at Whitewood. In the early 1940s, the family moved to Grundy and he attended Grundy High School where he graduated in 1951. He began working at the Mountaineer in 1944 at the age of 11 as an apprentice helper, or “printer’s devil” – the official newspaper jargon for the title. He continued to work for the newspaper throughout his growing up years, also working at the former Lynwood Theatre.
