Non-Daily Newspaper Internships

ALEXANDRIA - The Alexandria Times
The Alexandria Times offers unpaid high school and college internships throughout the year. Duties include reporting and copy editing, with opportunities for exposure to every aspect of weekly newspaper production, including research, interviewing, design, advertising and marketing. High school interns must be juniors or seniors with strong writing skills. AMELIA - The Amelia Bulletin Monitor
The Amelia Bulletin Monitor, located in Amelia Court House (about 30 mins. SW of Richmond), has a year-round and/or summertime internship opportunity available. The position will offer some compensation and will require 20-30 hours weekly. We will expose the right candidate to all facets of weekly production, including news writing, photography, layout, advertising, circulation, and graphic arts. FINCASTLE - The Fincastle Herald
The Fincastle Herald offers one unpaid editorial internship in fall, spring and summer. Duties include reporting (primarily community news and features), page design, some photography. An applicant must have completed at least his or her sophomore year, be majoring in communications or journalism, have completed basic reporting and writing classes, and preferably have worked on student newspaper. GALAX - The Gazette
The Gazette, a 3-day-a-week newspaper, offers one unpaid internship in the news department. Journalism/communications majors preferred. Skills preferred include a proven ability to write clearly, typing, some photography and electronic makeup. Intern will learn news writing, feature writing, production, general assignment and beat coverage, photography, electronic makeup and how to perform on deadline. POWHATAN - Powhatan Today
Powhatan Today, located about 30 minutes from Richmond, offers unpaid internships in the editorial department all year long. Editorial interns write features, sports articles, take photographs and assist the editor. Interns have the chance to learn how a small, community newspaper works. RICHMOND - Style Weekly
Style Weekly offers unpaid internships during the fall and spring semesters, as well as during the summer. The city's 23-year-old newsmagazine, with a circulation of 42,500, features news, entertainment, culture and opinion. Interns work closely with editors and other editorial staff to develop content for the magazine, appropriate to their skill level and interest. We look for interns who are independent, creative and enthusiastic about journalism. Internships are also available in sales, marketing and promotions. Online at http://www.styleweekly.com. ROSSLYN - Washington Business Journal
Washington Business Journal is looking for an intern who would like to help us produce the weekly paper the Washington business community relies on. If you're cheerful, helpful, and can cope with everything from list research to some writing and perhaps reporting tasks, we'd like to talk to you. We can provide you an opportunity to learn what makes a newspaper thrive, and, if all works out, the chance to get a couple of bylines for your clip file.
