BRISTOL - Bristol Herald Courier
The Bristol Herald Courier offers two paid internships during the summer. They run 12 weeks each beginning mid May. We prefer the prospective intern to have at least one year of college newspaper experience or a prior internship with another newspaper. Herald Courier interns will average at least three news and/or feature bylines a week in a working, learning environment. FREDERICKSBURG - The Free Lance-Star
Join The Free Lance–Star during your summer break for an unforgettable learning experience!  The Free Lance–Star is offering paid internship opportunities in the following departments for a 10-week period:
News Reporting: News Reporting interns cover news and feature stories, conduct research and have stories published in various sections of the newspaper.  Interns receive close editing and feedback from various Editors.  Submit 5 to 10 clips or classroom writing samples. Page Design: Page Design interns work closely with Design Editors to lay out news and feature pages for daily and special sections. Submit portfolio for consideration. Photography: The Photography intern will shoot news, sports, features, business and studio work.  Submit portfolio for consideration. Advertising Sales: Advertising interns will assist with special sections and work with Sales Consultants. Interns also will be exposed to all facets of our Classified Call Center operations. Advertising Design: Advertising Design interns will design advertisements for the daily newspaper and special sections.  Submit portfolio for consideration. Information Technology: Information Technology interns will assist with various programming projects. Human Resources: Human Resources interns support the HR department with various projects while gaining experience and knowledge of all HR functions. Radio: Radio interns assist with remotes, appearances, and daily audio production. The internship is open to rising college juniors, seniors and graduating college seniors. LYNCHBURG - The News & Advance
The News & Advance, a morning paper, offers one paid reporting internship. Interns are considered general assignment reporters and do real stories, not busywork. Rising seniors and juniors studying journalism or involved with campus newspapers are preferred. The internship is 12 weeks. Interns will need a car. Selection is based on experience and ability. Additional consideration is also given for students from the Central Virginia area. Send a cover letter explaining what you want to get out of the internship and six clips. NEWPORT NEWS - Daily Press
Summer internships will be awarded. The internships may be filled in any newsroom function: local news, sports, business, features, copy desk, photo or graphics. Teamwork is underscored at every level in our newsroom: in the group of senior editors, in groups of team editors, in teams of reporters, copy editors and photographers. You will be assigned real work: reporting, creating graphics, shooting photographs and copy editing stories. You will need your own car (we reimburse for mileage). To expose you to different aspects of newsroom operations, you will handle assignments from various subject areas. Each intern is assigned a mentor and will participate in team meetings and in brown-bag programs on topical subjects. The internships are generally aimed at - but not limited to - rising juniors, seniors or recent graduates. Selection will be based on experience (college newspaper and professional internships), transcripts, essays and references. Finalists may be interviewed. NORFOLK - The Virginian-Pilot
Are you a college student who has completed your junior or senior year? Have you worked on your college newspaper? Would you like to spend your summer working at a 180,000-circulation newspaper located near the beach? Then you are eligible for The Virginian-Pilot summer internship program!

The program is aimed at students with the following career aspirations:
• Reporters
• Copy Editors
• Photographers
• Graphic Artists
• Page Designers

The Virginian-Pilot internships are highly competitive. Therefore, experience working on a college newspaper is a must, and a previous internship at a daily paper is a plus. Reporters and photographers will need a car. Sophomores and graduate students also are eligible. Interns will have regular opportunities to meet with The Pilot’s editors and other newsroom professionals to talk about their career options.

Interested? Then here’s what you need to do:

1) Submit a cover letter and a résumé that includes the names of three references.

2) Reporters, copy editors and designers should submit a print portfolio that includes eight to 10 published work samples showing the range of your best writing, page layout or headline writing.

3) Photographers and graphic artists should submit a print portfolio that includes at least 20 samples of published photographs or illustrations. No CDs, please.

The Pilot selects 12 interns, who will be notified by January 30, 2008. The pay is $575 a week. All internships run for 12 weeks, except for the one on the sports copy desk that lasts for six months. Got questions? E-mail .



PULASKI - The Southwest Times
The Southwest Times offers 1-5 unpaid internships in advertising, editorial, photography and technical support throughout the year. Interns are generally allowed to work in their chosen areas. Since internships are not paid positions, hours and days, etc. are liberal. Established successful internship relationship with Radford University and Virginia Tech. RICHMOND - Richmond Times-Dispatch
The Richmond Times-Dispatch summer internship program offers full-time, paid positions for 10 weeks for upper classmen or new graduates. These include three reporting positions, two multimedia reporter/producer positions, and a graphic artist position.

Our copy editing position is only through the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund copy editing program.

In the fall, we offer one photography internship position. This past summer, we paid our interns $450 a week.

The application deadline is December 22, 2008, for the summer positions. For the fall photography position, the deadline is June 2, 2009.

Applications should include a cover letter, resume, and 10 to 12 clips and CDs for photo and graphic candidates. The clips should be on 8 1/2 by 11 paper and, for ease of reading and review, NOT reduced in type size. Send your application to:

STAUNTON - The News Leader
The News Leader offers at least one paid, full-time summer internship to a qualified college student. The number available and specialty area vary each year. Candidates in news, sports or feature writing, photography or copy editing/design are considered. Candidates are selected based on their college newspaper experience and clips. Candidates are assigned and scheduled as appropriate to skill level. The newspaper also offers a limited number of part-time school-year internships of 10-15 hours per week in writing and photography. STRASBURG - Northern Virginia Daily
The Northern Virginia Daily, one of the state’s most honored small daily newspapers, offers a paid summer internship in the newsroom. The intern will write news and feature stories and will produce copy for real estate, food and religion sections. There are also opportunities to learn production. The Washington Times offers 10 paid internships in news, graphics and photography in the summer. Interns work a 40-hour week in entry-level positions for eight weeks.
