BRISTOL - Bristol Herald CourierThe Bristol Herald Courier offers two paid internships during the summer. They run 12 weeks each beginning mid May. We prefer the prospective intern to have at least one year of college newspaper experience or a prior internship with another newspaper. Herald Courier interns will average at least three news and/or feature bylines a week in a working, learning environment. This 10-week summer internship offers the opportunity for a young journalist to work for a well-established daily newspaper with deep roots in a historic community. The paid internship is open to rising juniors, seniors and graduating college seniors.

NORFOLK - The Virginian-Pilot
ARE YOU A COLLEGE STUDENT who is currently enrolled in an accredited college or university? Have you worked on your college newspaper or other campus publication? Would you like to spend your summer working at a 170,000-circulation newspaper located near the beach? Then you are eligible for The Virginian-Pilot’s summer internship program!
Our internships are highly competitive. Therefore, experience working on a college newspaper is a must, and a previous internship at a daily paper is a plus. Reporters and photographers will need a car. Juniors and seniors are preferred, but sophomores and graduate students also are eligible.
The Pilot selects six interns, who will be notified by early February 2010. The pay is $600 a week. All internships run for 12 weeks, except for the one on the sports desk that lasts for six months. Interns will have regular opportunities to meet with The Pilot’s editors and other newsroom professionals to talk about their career options.

TO APPLY: Submit a cover letter, resume and the names of three references. Reporters, copy editors and designers should include eight to ten published work samples showing the range of your best writing, page layout or headline writing. You may include a CD to accompany your packet or add links, but we still must see examples of your published work as it appeared in print. Photographers should submit a print portfolio or CD that includes at least 20 samples of published photographs.

PULASKI - The Southwest Times
The Southwest Times offers 1-5 unpaid internships in advertising, editorial, photography and technical support throughout the year. Interns are generally allowed to work in their chosen areas. Since internships are not paid positions, hours and days, etc. are liberal. Established successful internship relationship with Radford University and Virginia Tech.
