A Richmond woman who accused Henrico County police of abusing her during an arrest was convicted today of multiple charges linked to the incident. A Henrico judge, pointedly referring to a prior conviction in Richmond for resisting arrest, sentenced Deontra C. Johnson to one month in jail today in connection with a traffic stop that ended with Johnson being repeatedly Tasered by a Henrico police officer. Chesterfield County will purchase 80 acres along the Appomattox River for $560,000 with plans to convert it into a nature park. The county's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously today to buy the land from John J. Radcliffe if a proposed nature trail and canoe launch along the 1-mile stretch of river is approved by the county's Planning Commission. Wall Street hit levels not seen since 2003, with the Dow Jones industrial average falling below the 8,000 mark, as the fate of Detroit's Big Three automakers and the economy disheartened investors. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The University of Richmond kept 16,260 at the Carrier Dome uneasy until the final minute, but Syracuse beat the Spiders 76-71 last night. In the College Basketball Experience Classic, Richmond took a 38-31 halftime lead behind guard David Gonzalvez, who scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the first 20 minutes. But in the first five minutes of the second half, Syracuse outscored UR 16-3. Orange guard Eric Devendorf hit three 3-pointers as Syracuse went ahead 47-41 with 15 minutes left. The Orange (2-0) stayed ahead the rest of the way with a largest lead of nine with 3 minutes left. Xavier Henry, a chiseled, 6-6 Adonis from Oklahoma City, announced yesterday that he will play basketball at the University of Memphis next year. Henry seems to be a nice young man from a solid family. Coach Bud Foster has been the face of the Hokies' defense since 1995, when he took over as coordinator. |
