‘Examiner’ will launch Sunday edition
Effective July 13, The Washington Examiner and its sibling newspapers in Baltimore and San Francisco will publish Sunday editions of the newspaper. That announcement was made Thursday by Denver-based Clarity Media Group, parent company of The Examiner newspapers.
In addition to the Sunday edition, which will replace the existing Saturday issues, The Examiner plans to double its single-copy rack and street-vendor distribution. In Washington, that will translate into about 100,000 copies, said Publisher Michael Phelps.
In addition, the Thursday editions of The Examiner will be expanded to include more news about entertainment, sports and leisure.
CMG also announced plans to scale back its home deliveries to Thursdays and Sundays. The company said reader feedback found that customers were favoring Thursdays and Sundays over the other days of the week for home delivery — Thursday because it offers a weekend preview opportunity, and Sunday because that historically has been a popular paper.
"The changes announced [Thursday] demonstrate a commitment to listen to our readers and advertisers, and make the adjustments needed to better serve their needs," Clarity Media Group CEO Ryan McKibben said in a statement. "As a result of this culture, our dedicated team produces what I believe are some of the best free newspapers in America. Going forward, that's precisely what The Examiner will do."
According to the latest audit figures, The Washington Examiner has an average free circulation of 257,000 weekdays and 241,000 on Saturdays.
