CJW Deadline, Roadshows and a Roast: Virginia’s E-Press for May 30

VPA / May 31, 2012
COMMUNITY JOURNALISM WORKSHOP

Deadline to register for this year's Community Journalism Workshop is Friday, June 1

This Friday, June 1, is the deadline to register for this year's Community Journalism Workshop, June 21-22 at VPA. Why should you sign up for this two-day, intensive workshop? Here are our top 10 reasons:

1. It's great training for beginning journalists and interns.
2. It's a useful refresher for mid-career journalists who want to polish their skills.
3. Food is included. Always a good thing.
4. It focuses on reporting and writing, with special attention to ethics.
5. A number of CJW alumni have gone on to distinguished, award-winning careers, like this year's keynote speaker. Mike Jones, Washington Redskins beat writer for The Washington Post, attended the first-ever CJW.
6. You learn from seasoned editors who are in the newsroom, know what the daily work of reporting and editing is like and will share their best tips with you.
7. In addition to group learning, you get a one-on-one critique of your work.
8. Compared to similar training programs, CJW is affordable at $99 for VPA members, $250 for non-members and $74 overnight room rates at the Comfort Suites Innsbrook.
9. The instruction doesn't stop on Friday afternoon; you get a take-home "tool box" of resources that you can use on the job.
10. It's a great investment to make in a journalist's career.

As CJW instructor Anne Adams of The Recorder says, "You know who needs to attend. Sign them up today!"

THE HEAT IS ON!

RT-D's Jeff Schapiro roasted by three former governors, Speaker Howell and AP's Bob Lewis

Virginia politicians happily banded together on May 29 at the Richmond Marriott to turn up the heat on Richmond Times-Dispatch political commentator Jeff Schapiro.

The fiery event supported a worthy cause: the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP). Approximately 350 packed the Marriott ballroom for the roast, which raised $171,000 for VPAP.

Schapiro's roasting came from former governors Jerry Baliles, George Allen and Tim Kaine; Del. Bill Howell, Speaker of the House of Delegates; and Bob Lewis of the Associated Press. Page Melton Ivie served as emcee, while sparks flew onstage -- all in fun.

For those who missed it: here's video coverage from the Times-Dispatch, plus photos from VPAP and articles from the Times-Dispatch's Andrew Cain and The Washington Post's Anita Kumar.
