VPA / June 07, 2012
GEORGE MASON AWARDStewart Bryan will receive George Mason Award on June 12 at the University of Richmond
J. Stewart Bryan III, whose career has included work in almost every aspect of journalism from reporting to corporate management, has been named winner of the 2012 George Mason Award for significant contributions to the advancement of journalism in Virginia.
Society of Professional Journalists, Virginia Pro Chapter (SPJVA), presents the annual award. It cited Bryan's long support, as a publisher and corporate executive, of battling state and local governments and businesses trying to thwart the public's right to know.
Bryan marked his 45th anniversary as a member of SPJ, the nation's largest journalism professional organization, June 1. He affiliated with the Virginia Pro Chapter in the late 1970s. Full release: http://virginiaspj.wordpress.com/2012/06/05/stewart-bryan-to-

The honor will be presented Tuesday, June 12, at SPJVA's 49th George Mason Award Celebration, at the University of Richmond, Tyler Haynes Commons, Alice Haynes Room, beginning with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7. Tickets are $50 per person. George Mason Fellows (program sponsor) tickets are $90 each.

VPA ON THE ROAD
Didn't make it to a roadshow? Share your ideas!
The Virginia Press Association roadshows continue this week in Chatham, where publishers and staff will gather for discussion and idea-sharing. There is no cost to participate in these small, informal gatherings, although pre-registration is requested. Bring your brainstorming skills!
The final meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 7, in Chatham (Economic Development Office, 34 N. Main St.), noon-2 p.m. The roadshow in Bristol, scheduled for Friday, has been canceled because of low participation.
VPA is grateful to everyone who has attended our roadshows in Williamsburg, Lexington and Warrenton. A report from these meetings will be produced and given to the VPA Board of Directors at its next meeting in July.
If you were not able to attend a roadshow but have thoughts or ideas you'd like to share, please email them to Kim Woodward at VPA, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), by June 29.

Pew Internet reports more than half of older Americans are now online
According to results of a new Pew research study, as of April 2012, 53% of American adults age 65 and older use the internet or email. Though these adults are still less likely than all other age groups to use the internet, the latest data represent the first time that half of seniors are going online. After several years of very little growth among this group, these gains are significant.
