Feature story writing Place: 3
Name: Lynn Wolstenholme Publication: Loudoun Times-Mirror
City: Leesburg Subject: Holocaust
Comments: There are lots of Holocaust memorials throughout the world, but by telling us the story of one woman and her family, the author puts a face on the horror.

Headline writing Place: 1
Name: Ted Shockley Publication: The Eastern Shore News
City: Accomac Subject: On roadways: booze, guns, moving cars with dead drivers
Comments: Really creative headlines. Outside of the box, refreshing take on news headlines. Creative use of photos and text and wordplay.

Headline writing Place: 2
Name: Jay Diem Publication: The Eastern Shore News
City: Accomac Subject: To bee or not to bee
Comments: Creative use of photos and text and wordplay. Unconventional and brilliant.

Headline writing Place: 3
Name: Jeff Poole Publication: Orange County Review
City: Orange Subject: Review headlines
Comments: Sharp, witty and smart headlines.

Special sections or special editions Place: 1
Name: Clissa S. England, Tom Bond, Holly Prestidge Publication: Richmond Times-Dispatch
City: Richmond Subject: Discover Richmond
Comments: A handsomely laid-out guide to the area, logically arranged in an inviting typestyle with clearly designed sections of interest to newcomers and residents alike.

Special sections or special editions Place: 2
Name: Staff Publication: Daily Press
City: Newport News Subject: College football preview section (8/28)
Comments: Smart-looking section chock-a-block with information nearly packaged and clearly presented.

Special sections or special editions Place: 3
Name: Staff Publication: The Virginian-Pilot
City: Norfolk Subject: NASCAR 2007
Comments: From the checkered-flag cover through the obligatory schedule listings, this section conveys the speed of the sport.

Critical writing Place: 1
Name: Joseph W. Cates Publication: Richmond Parents Monthly
City: Richmond Subject: RPM KidSpin
Comments: Joseph Cates' reviews read as smoothly as buttah. His casual tone, backed with carefully considered opinions, is perfect for talking about children's music to parents. His adjectives and verbs are lively but not overwhelming or overly abundant. I liked the way he set up his reviews to discuss the "good" and the "not so good."

Critical writing Place: 2
Name: Warren Rojas Publication: Northern Virginia Magazine
City: McLean Subject: Best New Restaurants; Best Bargain Dining; Shore Leave
Comments: Warren Rojas has mastered the tight, blurby writing that really works in magazines. He has some great turns of phrase in his "Best new restaurants" feature, including "boozy ball of mint julep ice cream." as well as terrific food words: toothsome, debilitating" deep-freid Snickers bars, "stunning" to describe roast garlic in olive oil. But the "Bargain Dining" feature was too blurby for me -- one sentence on each restaurant.

Critical writing Place: 3
Name: Wayne Melton Publication: Style Weekly
City: Richmond Subject: Film Criticism
Comments: "If only Murray had made." Wayne Melton's criticism is incisive but quite funny. He does a good job of balancing critique with information, not wasting too much time on summary but not assuming the reader knows what the film is about. His writing is very clear and doesn't get bogged down in adjectives or history.

Special sections or special editions Place: 1
Name: Tonya Hall Bowyer, Amanda Bolen Publication: The News-Messenger
City: Christiansburg Subject: Extra section printed in response to the April 16th Virginia Tech Tragedy
Comments: What can we say? The paper, under duress and crisis, pooled its resources and responded with grace and dignity to a horrific event. They are real troupers.

Special sections or special editions Place: 2
Name: Lawson Koeppel, Amanda Bolen Publication: The News-Messenger
City: Christiansburg Subject: Special pictorial/memorial edition printed the Saturday following the April 16th Virginia Tech tragedy
Comments: Same as previous comments.

Special sections or special editions Place: 3
Name: Staff Publication: The Dickenson Star
City: Clintwood Subject: Voters' Guide
Comments: Clean, comprehensive and informative. It took a lot of effort and the work paid off.

Business, financial or agricultural pages Place: 1
Name: Staff Publication: The Virginian-Pilot
City: Norfolk Subject: Business Pages
Comments: Would have liked better pages on the mandatory dates. Still, I applaud the efforts to design inside pages, which many competitions are missing.

Business, financial or agricultural pages Place: 2
Name: Staff Publication: The Free Lance-Star
City: Fredericksburg Subject:
Comments: Templates make for good starting points. A few too many tricks on covers. Let the content have a chance, too.

Business, financial or agricultural pages Place: 3
Name: Pam Feibish, Mark Ferguson, Jack Norton, Jeremy Glover Publication: Richmond Times-Dispatch
City: Richmond Subject: Optional dates: April 15 and June 17
Comments: Big section with a lot going on and a lot of resources. Would have liked better optional entries and a few new ideas on inside pages.

Combination picture and story Place: 1
Name: Bill Lohmann, Bob Brown, John Camejo Publication: Richmond Times-Dispatch
City: Richmond Subject: Just a natural playground
Comments: Story and photos sell the reader on a place of obscurity but with a secret side that makes you want to visit. Interesting packaging of facts and sights.

Combination picture and story Place: 2
Name: Kate Wiltrout, Chis Tyree Publication: The Virginian-Pilot
City: Norfolk Subject: The Quiet War
Comments: Moving story and photos illustrating a little-known U.S. effort in the Horn of Africa to aid Somali refugees. Entry both informs and troubles the reader. Good candidate for followup.

Combination picture and story Place: 3
Name: Justin Cook, Jared Turner Publication: The Roanoke Times
City: Roanoke Subject: GRIEVING AND HEALING
Comments: A sad story that you can't leave until you've read it all. A poignant collection of photos of a family trying to lead a normal life. An entry that a reader will remember.

Feature writing portfolio Place: 1
Name: Skip Miller Publication: Culpeper Times
City: Culpeper Subject: Feature Writing Portfolio
Comments: Superb writing on timely and important topics.
