Comments: Good mix of the serious and the playful. Lots of info conveyed on these pages and some risky decisions that paid dividends. The "in memory" page is emotional and moving.

Comments: The redesign of The Progress-Index creates visually attractive front pages making them well-organized and readable. The paper loses some of its visual sophistication after the A section but still manages to remain clean and accessible.

Comments: A visually energetic Sunday A1 (Oct. 28) and an outstandingly illustrated special section on a single them, "Culpeper 2010," shows that when the Star-Exponent marshals its resources, it can create compelling design.

Comments: The Pilot's design has always been excellent and the redesign takes this excellence to a new level. Typography and attention to detail on every page makes this paper the clear winning in a state of well-designed newspapers.

Comments: In a back-and-forth judging struggle, the Daily Press narrowly gets ahead of the equally well-designed Times-Dispatch. A fresh approach to section flags and innovative Weekend Ticket, Life covers, and strong sports covers were the deciding factors.

Comments: Newsy, well-designed A1 pages and clean approach to all section fronts. A slightly more conservative approach that the Daily Press but one that seems to suit its overall design philosophy.

Comments: Once again, the judges were impressed by the redesign of The Progress-Index. The template provides the designers with an opportunity to be creative and maintain a clean presentation of photos, headlines, breakouts and teasers.

Comments: Although we don't agree with all of the Daily's design decision, you have to admire some of their tabloid audacity (Convickted -- c'mon, guys). Still, they retain a clean approach to design and presentation.
