Feature writing portfolio Place: 2
Name: Matt Van Tassel Publication: Loudoun Times-Mirror
City: Leesburg Subject: Feature Writing- Various Topics
Comments: This reporter has a unique and vivid writing style. He has chosen to report on topics that many would shy away from or would simply think absurd. He paints a picture with his words and conveys atmospheres and subcultures eloquently.

Feature writing portfolio Place: 3
Name: Michael Lee Pope Publication: Alexandria Gazette Packet
City: Alexandria Subject: The Feature Presentation
Comments: This is a packet of stories that I'm sure were warmly welcomed by readers in Alexandria. This reporter writes eloquently and provides a good amount of background information and analysis to educate his readers. Well done.

Front page Place: 1
Name: Paul McFarlane Publication: The Tidewater News
City: Franklin Subject: Feb. 5, May 30, June 10 and Oct. 5 front pages
Comments: May 30 edition is exceptionally strong in layout. Clock headline is catchy.

Front page Place: 2
Name: Staff Publication: Orange County Review
City: Orange Subject: Review front pages
Comments: Clean layouts, clear headlines.

Front page Place: 3
Name: Kevin Seabrooke Publication: The Warren Sentinel
City: Front Royal Subject: Front page design
Comments: New, May 22 centerpiece presentation is a big winner. Iraq is excellent, too. Some headlines seem too small, however.

Sports writing portfolio Place: 1
Name: Eli Saslow Publication: The Washington Post
City: Washington Subject: Punishing Race Is An Enticing Lost Cause
Comments: Portfolio showed great diversity and style.

Sports writing portfolio Place: 2
Name: Robert Anderson Publication: The Roanoke Times
City: Roanoke Subject: Sports portfolio
Comments: Great, great feature writer.

Sports writing portfolio Place: 3
Name: Mike Jones Publication: The Washington Times
City: Washington Subject: A simple matter, 3/6; Autograph seekers, 7/21; The fight for Beijing, 9/5
Comments: No comments from judge.

Editorial writing Place: 1
Name: Janis Jaquith Publication: The Hook
City: Charlottesville Subject: Essays
Comments: These columns are short, crisp and sharp. They unexpectedly stab the reader because they avoid the obvious. Yet each column is different. "In a flash" is breathtaking (no pun intended). "Scribo" leads to a surprising conclusion. "Snow job" is filled with suspense. Nice work.

Editorial writing Place: 2
Name: Tom Robotham Publication: Port Folio Weekly
City: Norfolk Subject: Tom's Editorials
Comments: These editorials tackle complex issues. The opinions are thoughtful. They're useful because Tom considers potential disagreements in advance and then tackles them head-on. The reader is left with something to think about, regardless of whether they agree with the writer.

Editorial writing Place: 3
Name: Staff Publication: Washington Business Journal
City: Arlington Subject: DC CFO should clean up office; Library should be reserved for kids; Plan for paying for tunnels is sound
Comments: Each of these editorials reflects open minds and original thinking. "Under payment" reaches a surprise conclusion for a business publication. "Sloppy oversight" cuts through the politics and allows simple facts to stand on their own. "Give it to the kids" offers an especially swell idea. I hope officials consider your plan.

General news writing Place: 1
Name: Scott Bass Publication: Style Weekly
City: Richmond Subject: The Harvey Family
Comments: The entry form calls this article "a delicate choice" and I don't doubt some readers chafed when they saw it. But I think you did the right thing. Scott gave the story the delicate treatment the topic warrants, but didn't avoid the painful truths. This article is a great public service -- and it gives some meaning to these senseless deaths. This was a difficult job and very well done.

General news writing Place: 2
Name: Jack Cooksey, Bill Farrar, Harry Kollatz Jr. Publication: Richmond Magazine
City: Richmond Subject: Transportation package, March
Comments: Very unsexy topic, admits the entry form. Yet, I'm sure most of your readers are touched by the issues this article explores. The article clearly separates the factors that led to the problem and avoids offering easy answers.

General news writing Place: 3
Name: Lisa Provence Publication: The Hook
City: Charlottesville Subject: Jailing the Parents
Comments: Phew! Complicated story -- and controversial. This lends context only a skilled local reporter can deliver. Lisa's simple writing style (that's a compliment) lets the story tell itself.

Special sections or special editions Place: 1
Name: Jean Card, David Schultz, Greg Wyshynski, Louise Krafft, Rich Sanders Publication: Arlington Connection
City: Arlington Subject: Newcomer’s & Community Guide
Comments: A beautifully laid-out newcomers guide with more than just lists of community resources. We especially liked the article that outlined the five most important issues facing the town and the moving-in to-do list.

Special sections or special editions Place: 2
Name: Staff Publication: The Eastern Shore News
City: Accomac Subject: Virginia's Eastern Shore
Comments: Gorgeous cover. We really liked how this supplement was organized and the design that reinforced the organization. The story about Johnny Strand was compelling.

Special sections or special editions Place: 3
Name: Joe B. Chandler, W. David Conner II Publication: The Gazette-Virginian
City: South Boston Subject: SBS 50th Anniversary section
Comments: Certainly a lot of ads, but the story content wasn't ad-driven. Interesting histories of the event and the people involved in it.

Combination picture and story Place: 1
Name: Teresa Mullins, Paula Tate Publication: The Dickenson Star
City: Clintwood Subject: Old jail's future uncertain
Comments: The Dickenson Star turns a question of a dilapidated jail into a history tour. Even the layout of the pictures gives one the sense that they are walking through the old jail, meshing perfectly. The ability to make a less-than-newsworthy story readable was a sign of good team effort.

Combination picture and story Place: 2
Name: Anita Sherman, Kevin Allen, Michelle Burdette Publication: Rappahannock News
City: Washington Subject: Local foods and farmers markets featured
Comments: While the color scheme almost uses too much green, the side-by-side travelogue and explanation of the value of locally grown crops meshes well with the bright colors. Even the B&W pages have informative captions.

Combination picture and story Place: 3
Name: Claudia Bigelow Publication: The Clarke Times-Courier
City: Berryville Subject: Horses
Comments: The Welsh pony in the top picture commands you to take a second look at the article. The progression of photos from top-to-bottom also shows the true beneficiary of Ms. Pillion's work, in spite of her gruffness. The story itself shows a web of connections.
