MILITARY REPORTER
The military – and all issues surrounding its various missions – go to the heart of our mission here at the Daily Press in Hampton Roads, Va. But we’re not all about guns and embedding in war zones. In fact, we consider the challenges faced here on the military’s home front to be our strength. If accepted to be our military reporter you will cover the world’s largest naval station, an Army base that handles transportation and logistics in Iraq, a Civil War-era base about to be mothballed, Special Forces units, a strategic linchpin for the Air Force and many joint military operations. You’ll write about extreme weapons, such as nuclear carriers, drones and the F-22 Raptors. But we put a high value in the human stories – whether those involve families strained by repeated deployments or veterans struggling to cope with physical or psychological wounds. The successful candidate will have at least three years of experience at a daily newspaper, a magazine covering military issues or a wire service. You’ll need to show investigative reporting skills and your copy will need to show off your storytelling abilities. We’re eager to improve our staff’s diversity. We take pride in our ability to lead Tribune Co. through this period of media evolution. We’ve sent staffers to the Chicago Tribune, RedEye, the Houston Chronicle, Investor’s Business Daily, Orlando Sentinel and Baltimore Sun. Here you’ll learn or hone skills that will prepare you for tomorrow’s media demands. To apply send seven of your most enterprising news packages (coverage of routine events and meetings won’t impress us) to: The Daily Press, c/o Jill Green, 7505 Warwick Blvd., Newport New, VA 23607
