Web Site Hosting Shouldn’t Be Expensive

Web site hosting for a newspaper mostly comes down to reliability, service and price.Reliability means that the site is accessible 99.9 percent of the time and that it displays quickly when someone visits it. Service means that the hosting company is responsive and that it takes care of problems quickly -- and doesn't cause them in the first place. Price of course means getting reliability and service for a reasonable cost.
But it doesn't always work that way.
Over the years, I've known too many examples of poor reliability, poor service and high price. Obviously, a daily newspaper site with a lot of traffic will pay more and should get more. But an average Virginia weekly newspaper site shouldn't be paying more than about $20 to $50 for quality, reliable Web hosting. The only exception would be sites with monthly pages views in the hundreds of thousands and the bandwidth demands that go with that level of traffic.
If you suspect you are paying too much for Web hosting or are not happy with the quality of service, please contact me at scottb (at) vpa.net for guidelines on what prices are appropriate for hosting.
